| What's Spinning | |
|
This is where I'm gonna let you know what cd I'm listening to right now. When I buy new music, I stick it in my car cd player and let it play until I decide I don't like it, or I memorize every word because I love it so much. So what's spinning? | |
| Pat McLaughlin "Horsefly" Pat McLaughlin may not be someone you've heard of, but you've almost certainly heard him. Pat comes to us from the Nashville area where he carries on his unique style of music. He's part folk, part blues, sings like Van Morrison, and plays like no one else. I discovered Pat while reading the liner notes on my new John Prine CD, Fair and Square. Later in 2005 I had the honor of seeing Pat live for the first time at the Ryman Auditorium while he was on tour with Prine. Pat's stage presence is something else altogether. Always moving and grooving smiling and stomping, really into what he's playing. I once again had the honor of seeing Pat perform with Prine in August, 2006 at the Tivoli Theater in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but this time it was different. Pat came on stage as the opener and tore us all apart with seven of his original tunes and a haunting rendition of Wichita Lineman with Jason Wilbur. Hearing Pat's original stuff, I was in a hurry to drive back home to Cookeville, log on to PatMcLaughlin.com and order my very own copy of his new CD, Horsefly. Horsefly contains 13 tracks that each live a life of their own. If I had to pick favorites, I'd probably choose God and Everybody, Cry to Me, Little Child, The Longer the Waiting, Baby Ain't Got No Home,......Aw Heck, why don't I just pick them all? Anyway, check out Pat's website, www.patmclaughlin.com where you can peruse his discography and have a listen to some samples and decide for yourself that Pat McLaughlin is a worthy addition to any CD collection. Okay, so here's where I talk about my own CD a little bit. It has ten songs that I wrote, recorded, mixed, mastered, performed, etc. etc. in my home. I plan to do a large piece about home recording soon to let everyone in on how easily you can take your own music and burn CD's to share with your friends. Anyhow, I have produced these CD's and have been mailing them out to different parts of the country. Not many people have heard these songs, but I got a cd in the mail from a guy, and I sent him one in return, and he liked it, so I sent it to a couple of other guys, and they seemed to like it, so I've been trying to share a little more with the world. I'm selling these cd's for $5.00, that covers my supplies and shipping charges. To learn more about this cd and my own personal music, visit shane-pack.com where you can read my bio, and listen to some of the songs on the cd. Just remember, the downloadable songs are not samples, they're the entire song, so some of the downloads take 1-2 minutes. Part of the joy I've found listening to John Prine are all of the other wonderful musicians out there. I like to find those hidden gem songwriters who are unknown and unheard of. There is some great music out there, you just have to go out and get it....... | ||
![]() Todd Snider |
Okay, I've been in denial all this time, but I'm gonna come right out and admit that I'm becoming a huge Todd Snider fan. I bought Happy to Be Here a couple of years ago and listened to it and put it on the back burner for a while. I would get it out and listen to it occasionally, but I never developed a serious love affair between me and that cd. Then I saw Todd live at the Bluebird and liked his stage presence. So I got home and ordered New Connection which features Todd doing a cover of "Crooked Piece of Time" which features John Prine doing a guest appearance. Definately a cool album, so then I ordered Songs For the Daily Planet which was okay, but it was some of his earlier stuff, and I got the feeling he was playing more for the mainstream give me a hit crowd. So then I ordered East Nashville Skyline which is his newest cd, and it's fantastic. I can't get enough. His songwriting is intelligent, witty, and just downright good. His sound is unique, inspired, and emotional. He lives in East Nashville and enjoys the fact that he gets paid to do what he does. Life is good, but over all Todd, I think you're an allright guy.
